The Polished Concrete Floor Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

A polished concrete floor won’t just appear with a quick buff and shine.

Establishing a polished concrete floor is a process that takes the correct tools, a lot of patience and some hard work by the right team, just like Eco Grind.

If you have wondered how a polished concrete floor comes about and has that sleek, durable finish, here is a step-by-step guide from Eco Grind that helps break it down and polishes up all the details for you.

Polished Concrete Floor

Step 1 – Assessment and slab preparation

Before anything else, the slab space has to be cleared and cleaned, whether it’s a brand new area or an old one getting a new lease on life. Any old adhesives, paint, coatings or any loose parts should be stripped off/removed before the floor is checked for cracks, moisture issues or uneven spots. This stage sets the tone and is vital so problems don’t appear later.

Step 2 – Time for repairs

Any cracks and holes should be patched using either epoxy or cement-based fillers, depending on the size. The goal here isn’t perfection just yet, but to give the grinders a solid, level surface to work on.

Step 3 – The first grind

Using a heavy grinder with coarse diamonds (usually around 30–50 grit), the surface layer of concrete is removed. This flattens out the floor and, if you want the stone chips to show, it exposes the aggregate. Corners and edges are done separately with smaller machines.

Step 4 – Ready to hone

Work up through progressively finer diamond grits (80,150, 300 and so on). Each pass removes the scratches from the previous grit and refines the surface. At this stage the floor goes from rough concrete to something that’s starting to feel smooth underfoot and begins to reflect light.

Step 5 – Densifier is applied

A liquid densifier is spread across the floor. It soaks in and reacts with the concrete, making it harder and more resistant to wear. This is essential for achieving a high gloss and improving durability.

Step 6 – Get ready to polish

After densifying, continue polishing with finer diamonds (400, 800, 1500 up to 3000 depending on the desired sheen). Each pass adds more clarity and reflection, until the surface takes on that glass-like look.

Step 7 – Finish and seal

Depending on where the floor is going (indoor living areas, outside, etc.) a sealer may be applied. This helps with stain resistance and can also give an extra boost to the gloss.

Step 8 – Clean, inspect and finally maintain

Clean the floor of any residue, buff and inspect for uniformity. Touch up or fix any low spots or areas that need it. To maintain the floor, give it a sweep and mop when needed. Over time, a topical sealer can be applied if needed.
