Polished concrete flooring is becoming increasingly popular in Melbourne and no wonder!
It’s durable, low maintenance, aesthetically dynamic, and flexible.
Did you know there are different types of polished concrete floors and different processes that are used to create unique designs and textures?

Process – Polished Concrete Melbourne
The general process for creating polished concrete involves several steps including preparation, grinding, honing, and polishing.
Preparation:
The concrete surface is cleaned and prepared for the polishing process. Existing coatings, stains or sealers may need to be removed and any cracks or damage are repaired.
Grinding:
The concrete surface is ground using a grinding machine with progressively finer diamond abrasives to create a smooth and uniform surface.
Honing:
The ground surface is further prepared with finer diamond abrasives to remove any scratches or imperfections ready for polishing.
Polishing:
Finer diamond abrasives are used to create the desired finish and bring out natural colors and aggregates from within the concrete.
After these primary processes, a densifier and sealer may be applied to ensure resistance against wear and tear and enhance the final appearance.

Grinding and Polishing levels
Different types of polished floors can be created through slight adjustments to the overall process.
Grinding:
The level and depth of grinding can produce varying results. Low-level grinding removes the concrete top layer and results in a surface with little to no colour and texture variation. A deeper grinding reveals the aggregate and produces a salt and pepper appearance. Further grinding that heavily exposes the aggregate can produce a varying and contrasted floor with the appearance and colour highly dependent on the aggregate mineral components.
Polishing:
The polished finish can be targeted to the aesthetic desired by the client from matte to high gloss depending on the level of polishing. There is also the option of staining or coloring a polished concrete floor.
