Polished Concrete Floor Options Melbourne

You are looking at polished concrete floor options for your home or business. That’s a great decision. Your polished concrete floors will be easy to clean, non-allergenic, scratch resistant, and they will look amazing.

Now that you’ve made that decision, the next decision is what type of polished concrete floor do you want? Because yes, not all polished concrete floors are created equal. There are typically three levels of polishing that produce three very different results so we’re here to explain it all.

No exposure

The quickest and simplest type of polished concrete floors involved no surface grinding. Instead, the surface is simply polished to enhance the natural colour and variation of your poured concrete surface.

This method can be buffed to a fine shine and is sometimes referred to as a bronze finish. Your floor will look organic and will be durable enough to enhance with staining to achieve the colour you desire.

As this method requires a ready surface that is smooth and undamaged, it works best on freshly poured concrete rather than renewing old surfaces.

Partial exposure

With the partial exposure method, we gently grind back the surface until it begins to reveal the concrete aggregate.

The result is a speckled appearance that is sometimes called a salt-and-pepper look.

Like the no exposure option, you can customize the final appearance of your floor based on your preferences for colour and gloss level.

This option is a great alternative where the no exposure process wouldn’t be suitable or where full exposure is not desirable.

Full exposure

In this method, the surface is completely ground away to expose the elements of the concrete mix and buffed down to bring out the beauty of the aggregate minerals.

Full exposure floors can look somewhat like granite and because there is no standard pattern or concrete mix, you are guaranteed a unique polished concrete floor unlike anywhere else.

The natural aggregate colouring will depend on the mineral variations used in the original pour which could be grayscale or include earth tones, or vibrant colours. If you’re pouring fresh, you can think ahead by choosing an aggregate that’s going to suit the look you’re after.
