The difference between polished and burnished concrete

You can be forgiven for thinking burnished concrete is the same as polished concrete. These days, there are several different types of concrete that all look great in their own ways, and burnished is just one. Polished and burnished are two completely different techniques.

Mechanical polishing alters a concrete surface through grinding, honing and polishing using diamond abrasive grits, which Eco Grind does with much expertise.

Bumps and dips in the concrete slab are grinded away, as are marks or stains. A chemical hardener is then applied to the surface to densify the concrete, which is naturally porous, until the desired gloss and smoothness is achieved. It is this process that makes concrete more durable.

Burnished concrete on the other hand, is mechanically achieved by using burnishers known as power trowels with rotating blades. Like concrete grinders, they spin. Burnishers are less powerful, so they can’t grind down a surface. Instead, they are used to heat, melt and buff a coating that is applied to the surface. A wax-based chemical coating melts into the pores of the concrete.

They are economical and easy to maintain

Burnished concrete is a sustainable design option, using materials already present in the space. It is durable and won’t chip like other flooring materials. They are also hypoallergenic, so your entire family, and your pets, will always be comfortable.

The incredibly shiny surface reflects light, meaning you get a bright space which can potentially cut down on your electricity bills.

Burnished concrete is a sure way to transform your home. With something that is not only practical and functional, but looks incredible, why not give your home the makeover it deserves? Contact Eco Grind to discuss.
