It’s all in the finish

Take a look at this little gem, so smooth and graceful, you can see the reflection of brilliant blue coming through the windows. It’s a finish that reveals the natural stone and sand aggregate within the concrete slab, offering a bold, textured look that complements the laid-back luxury of coastal living.

A popular choice across residential, commercial and resort-style settings, full exposure polished concrete combines aesthetic appeal with long-lasting performance and minimal upkeep— just perfect for a tropical-type setting like Airlie Beach!

How we make it happen

There are quite a few steps involved in creating full exposure polished concrete floors. The “full exposure” look refers to grinding the concrete surface deep enough to expose as much aggregate as possible, resulting in a bold and textured appearance.

Preparing the slab

First up we take care of slab preparation. The concrete is poured with a mix that includes decorative aggregates like granite, quartz or river stones. The slab must be evenly poured and smoothed to avoid high and low spots that could cause inconsistencies in the final aggregate exposure.

Grinding

Once the slab has cured, it’s time to grind. Using heavy duty equipment with diamond abrasives, the top layer of the slab is removed to expose the underlying stone. Achieving a full exposure finish involves grinding 3–5 mm into the concrete surface, depending on the slab’s composition. This step is key to achieving the signature, high-end look that polished concrete is known for.

Honing, densifying and polishing

Next up it’s time for honing. Once the desired aggregate is revealed, the surface is refined using finer diamond abrasives. A densifier is applied to the honed floor, chemically reacting with the concrete to strengthen the surface and reduce porosity. Polishing continues with resin-bonded diamond pads, progressively increasing in grit to achieve the desired level of shine.

Sealing and burnishing
To maximise stain resistance and durability, a sealer is often applied. The final burnishing enhances gloss and locks in the protective coating.
